CAIRO – A 25-year-old pedestrian was killed after being hit by a semi near milepost 1 on northbound Interstate 57 near Cairo Monday night.

According to Illinois State Police, the semi was going north on I-57 around 8:50 p.m. when it struck the pedestrian in the left lane.

The pedestrian was fatally injured. The semi’s driver reported no injuries at the scene. The pedestrian’s name was not released.

Northbound I-57 reopened around 12:50 Tuesday morning. ISP continues to investigate the accident. No further information is available.
