MT. VERNON/TEXICO – The State Fire Marshal is investigating two fires that happened in Jefferson County this week.

According to the Jefferson County Fire Protection District, on Wednesday while equipment was being returned to the fire station from a reported structure fire, a house fire was reported northeast of Mt. Vernon just after 1 p.m.

Firefighters arrived and found the fire outside of a single story home that had extended into the roof line. Firefighters from Mt. Vernon, Bluford, Woodlawn and Wayne City along with Litton Ambulance were called to the scene for assistance. Waltonville Fire and Salem Fire provided district coverage. The home suffered significant damage. No injuries were reported.

Shortly after 9 Thursday morning, firefighters responded to a reported shop fire in rural Texico. They found a 30 by 60 pole barn shop with fire throughout.

As firefighters began extinguishing the fire, Kell Fire arrived and set up a draft site on scene to provide water. Mt. Vernon Fire arrived and set up their new aerial which was supplied and used to help put out the fire.  

In total Kell, Bluford, Wayne City, Woodlawn, Mt. Vernon and Centralia District firefighters, and Litton Ambulance were on scene. Benton Fire and Ashley Fire provided district coverage. The building was a total loss. No injuries were reported.
